Our History

The Medical Society of Mobile County was founded and incorporated in 1841 as the first Medical Society in the State of Alabama. We are the professional membership organization comprised of physicians, residents, and medical students in Mobile County, representing over 1200 members. We have been in existence for over 160 years. Our purpose is to promote and develop the science of medicine, to promote professionalism among our colleagues, and to conserve and protect the public health and to promote the betterment of the medical profession. Our members voluntarily support this organization through annual dues, enabling us to continue the many services established over the last century to doctors and to the community.

The Medical Society office also houses the Alliance, which is the organization of physicians’ spouses here in Mobile. In 1985, the Alliance created Rapahope, a local nonprofit that brings joy to the childhood cancer journey through recreational and support programs for those with childhood cancer and their families. Rapahope offers a free, week-long summer camp that gives children with cancer the opportunity to experience all the traditional summer camp fun – swimming, canoeing, horseback riding, arts & crafts, campfires – with other children who share a common medical experience. All campers attend for free. The proceeds from the Tour de LADR benefit Rapahope and further our mission.

In 2004, Dr. Glenn Esses approached the Medical Society of Mobile County and asked them to help organize a bike race for the local physicians and spouses. The motivation behind this event was to promote exercise and a healthy lifestyle among our colleagues. The 1st Annual Tour de LADR was held on Saturday, April 5, 2005. The event proved to be successful and the next year we opened it up to the community. Every year, we have seen an increase in support, participation, and volunteers.
